What is Botox?

Botox is a nonsurgical treatment used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. The treatment is frequently used to address frown lines, crow’s feet, and the forehead. The injections work by temporarily paralyzing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles allowing the skin to relax into a smoother appearance. Botox can be used to treat muscle spasms like eye twitches. Botox may also be used to address other parts of the face and signs of aging including:

  • The jawline to turn up the corners of the mouth
  • Saggy neck muscles, called platysma bands
  • Around the mouth to decrease signs of wrinkles (smoker’s lines)
  • Sides of the jaw to decrease the width of muscle from clenching teeth
  • The chin to improve the appearance of a dimpled or cobblestone chin

How Effective Is Botox?

The effects of the injection last anywhere from 3 to 12 months, depending on how long a patient has been having the injections. As the paralyzing effect wears off and muscle activity returns, lines and wrinkles will begin to reappear and follow-up visits every few months will be necessary for continued improvement. Over time, with regular Botox treatments, the wrinkles will have a less severe appearance as the muscles have been trained to relax. Botox is most effective on wrinkles that appear when the face moves, such as frown lines.

What Happens During Botox Treatment?

Botox treatments are delivered through injections into the skin or muscles resulting in a smoother and more youthful appearance to the skin. When you meet with your doctor, she will evaluate your face to pinpoint specific sites where injections will provide the most benefit. Results including a smoother appearance are noticeable within a few days of having the injections. Treatment usually takes around 20 minutes to complete. Botox injections are safe when administered by a trained professional.
