Dr. Rex Hamilton
Dr. Rex Hamilton is known throughout the United States and internationally as a leader in laser vision correction and premium cataract surgery. As noted above, he pioneered many new surgical techniques during his 15 years as Professor and Director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center at the Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles.
Dr. Hamilton was valedictorian of his high school class. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from Dartmouth College with an undergraduate degree in physics and mathematics, Dr. Hamilton earned a Master of Science degree in biomedical engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia. After working for several years in marketing and product planning for MRI systems at Siemens Medical Systems, Dr. Hamilton decided to pursue a career in medicine. He continued his education at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree and received numerous academic awards and scholarships, culminating in his graduating at the top of his class. He began performing cataract, corneal transplantation and refractive surgery during his residency training at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute. Following the completion of his residency, Dr. Hamilton spent and additional year of training as a fellow in refractive, cornea, anterior segment, cataract and glaucoma surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants under the directorship of Dr. Richard Lindstrom, uniformly recognized as one of the founding fathers of modern cataract and refractive surgery. He then returned to the Stein Eye Institute, where he became the Medical Director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center. During his 15 years on faculty at the Stein Eye Institute, Dr. Hamilton trained over 100 residents and fellows from the United States and countries throughout the world on the art and science of premium cataract and refractive surgery.
With his highly technical background, Dr. Hamilton is a true physician-scientist. During his many years conducting clinical research, Dr. Hamilton has become well known in the academic community for his expertise in the areas of premium intraocular lenses (toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus) for cataract surgery, corneal biomechanics and corneal imaging. He has authored 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, given more than 50 scientific presentations at national meetings and has delivered more than 150 invited lectures across the country and internationally. He has served on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Pattern Committee for Refractive Surgery, a publication that sets the standard of care for refractive surgery in the United States. He currently serves on the Refractive/Cataract Clinical Subcommittee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Since 2013, Dr. Hamilton and his colleagues on the Committee have published four articles teaching the finer points of new and emerging technologies for cataract and refractive surgery.
Dr. Hamilton looks forward to meeting you, evaluating your eye health and discussing a customized treatment plan that will offer you the best chance of meeting your individual visual needs.

David Hamilton spent more than six hours busting his ass, performing magic on my right eye. It is my belief that more than 90% of eye surgeons would not have dared to even try such a surgery. And even fewer who could pull it off. Today, with the aid of an industrial strength contact lens, I see 20/20 out of that eye.
Dr. Hamilton stands at the peak of the eye surgeon pyramid, world- renowned, a fearless jet fighter pilot of a surgeon. We’re talking Top Gun.
Dr. Hamilton just did my LASIK surgery and I’m glad I took the time to research my choices before taking the plunge. His reputation is well earned. I felt comfortable and confident during the procedure, which turned out to be a painless and slightly interesting 15 minutes long.
The results though. I had this done because I surf, and now when I’m on the water I can see the texture and variations of the ever-changing waves while I’m in them. I can’t express how great it is.
Dr. Hamilton is simply the best. He’s a top notch refractive surgeon who pays exquisite attention to detail, and his work speaks volumes! In terms of bedside manner, I would place Dr. Hamilton in the highest category of good people. Kind, considerate, professional, and he has a talent for explaining procedures in a way that patients can understand them. My refractive surgery experience was outstanding, and I cannot recommend Dr. Hamilton enough! Six Stars!
Dr. Hamilton performed LASIK surgery on my eyes in 2009 and completely changed my life. I wore glasses and contact lenses for 20 years and having LASIK is literally the best thing I’ve ever done. I am also a corneal refractive surgeon and I trusted Dr. Hamilton with my eyes. He is a leader in the field of refractive surgery and I am fortunate to have received the gift of sight from him. Dr. Hamilton has taught me everything I know about refractive surgery and my patients are benefitting daily from the influence he has on me.
If you are considering cataract or refractive surgery, see Dr. Hamilton! You will not be disappointed!!
When Dr. Hamilton was at Jules Stein, he did my cataracts. It was a painless and almost carefree experience. My eyesight is great and I have no complaints at all. I then found out that he left UCLA and instead of finding someone else, I decided to continue with him. He’s now in private practice and I went yesterday for my yearly check up. The staff was efficient and kind and when I saw him, he seemed very pleased to see me. I received the impression that Dr. Hamilton wants to be one of those doctors that you are “faithful” to because he knows you and whatever problems you may have with your eyes. The old-fashioned family doctor type — not just a cog in a huge medical machine. Anyhow, I realize this is hardly an eloquent review, but I most wholeheartedly recommend Dr Hamilton.
As much as I disliked wearing glasses and contacts, I was also very nervous about getting a LASIK procedure done. I was referred to Dr. Hamilton by people in the medical field whose opinions I greatly trust. I did some research on my own and quickly came to find out that he is respected as a national leader in eye surgeries. At the consultation visit, Dr. Hamilton was very personable, professional, and took the time to address all of my questions. Dr. Hamilton and his staff made every effort to keep me comfortable and calm during the surgery. He told me what to look at, and talked me through the procedure. I don’t have a high threshold for pain, but I found the surgery itself to be quick and painless. As I left the surgery center, my eyes were watery and a little sensitive, but as long as I kept them closed, I felt no pain. My husband drove me home and I took a nap for a couple of hours. When I woke up from the nap, it was one of the best feelings ever… I could see! And see clearly! At the follow-up visit the next day, my vision was 20/20 in one eye and 20/15 in the other. This gift of clear vision has been incredible and I’m forever thankful to Dr. Hamilton’s knowledge and skills. I definitely recommend Dr. Hamilton’s expertise if you are looking for a Cataract or LASIK surgeon.
I finally became fed up with the hassle of glasses and contacts and so a friend recommended that I talk to Dr. Hamilton about LASIK. I was a bit apprehensive, but his explanation of the procedure in layman’s terms made me comfortable. This was a life-changing procedure and I wish I had had it done sooner! The surgery was quick, there was no discomfort,. Later that afternoon, I was able to see clearly without glasses. Thank you Dr. Hamilton!
