PTERYGIUM TREATMENT EXPLAINED
A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of tissue on the conjunctiva, the clear, thin membrane covering the white part of the eye (sclera). It usually begins on the inner corner of the eye and can extend onto the cornea. Pterygia are typically wedge-shaped and may be pink, flesh-colored, or even somewhat red.
The exact cause of pterygia is not fully understood, but they are associated with exposure to UV light from the sun, dry or dusty environments, and irritants like wind and smoke. People who spend a lot of time outdoors, especially in sunny or arid climates, are more prone to developing pterygia.
At Santa Monica Eye Medical Group, we offer a range of cataract surgery options to suit your specific needs.

Lubricating Eye Drops
Relieves dryness and discomfort associated with Pterygium.
Pterygium Excision
This surgical procedure involves the careful removal of the abnormal tissue growth, known as the pterygium. The surgeon will delicately excise the pterygium from the surface of your eye, taking care to minimize any damage to the underlying healthy tissue. Our surgeons employ meticulous techniques to achieve the best cosmetic outcomes. They skillfully suture the area, using techniques that minimize scarring and promote optimal healing. By removing the pterygium, the procedure aims to alleviate symptoms, reduce inflammation, and prevent further growth.
Protective Eyewear
Shields your eyes from UV radiation, wind, and dust to prevent Pterygium progression.
Autograft or Amniotic Membrane Transplantation
n some cases, our surgeons may opt for amniotic membrane transplantation. This procedure involves using a thin, transparent membrane obtained from the placenta of consenting donors after childbirth. The amniotic membrane possesses regenerative properties that aid in healing and reduce inflammation. It is placed over the excised pterygium area, facilitating faster recovery and minimizing scarring.
Amniotic Membrane Transplantation
n some cases, our surgeons may opt for amniotic membrane transplantation.
Autograft
In this procedure, a small piece of healthy conjunctival tissue is carefully harvested from your own eye, typically from an area that is less visible. The harvested tissue is then placed onto the affected area to cover the excised pterygium site. Using your own tissue helps to reduce the risk of rejection or complications.

it became serious. She also is thoughtful and thinks about the whole picture - a great doctor – not just one to do an eye exam and send you on your way"

Yelp
"Very friendly staff and knowledgeable optometrist. They are helpful and courteous without being pushy or trying to force you to buy something you're not ready to buy yet. The optometrist was very professional and did a great job explaining the changes in my prescription and the new lenses I'd have to choose from as my previous brand is no longer on the market. 5/5 would recommend to anyone needing a good eye doctor in Los Angeles"
