Infectious Eye Diseases
Infectious eye conditions can be very painful and bothersome. If left untreated they could affect your vision, and you run the risk of spreading the infection to others. Some common eye infections include pink eye (conjunctivitis), Herpes corneal infection, keratitis, and blepharitis, all of which are easily treated if diagnosed early. The doctors of Santa Monica Eye Group are experts in diagnosing and treating infectious eye conditions so that you can see your way clear to feeling well again.
Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Pink eye is when there is an infection of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that covers the front of your eye. The inflammation covers the sclera, or the white part of your eye. The inflammation gives the eye its distinct ‘pink’ appearance. Pink eye is most commonly caused by an infection, either from bacteria or a virus, but can also result from allergies or irritants.
Individuals who have contracted pink eye from an infection should be extremely wary of spreading it. This means you should avoid touching the infected area, consistently wash your hands, and avoid sharing items such as eye glasses, makeup, or contact lenses.
Generally, most cases of pink eye are mild and will improve without needing to see a health professional at the Santa Monica Eye Medical Group. However, if you suffer from any of the following conditions, you should schedule an appointment at your soonest availability.
- Strong pain in the infected eye
- Light sensitivity
- Deep redness of the infected eye
- A weakened immune system
- Other eye conditions that are exacerbated by pink eye
